Islamic State (IS) Significant Attacks
Outside of War Zones

This map shows directed, supported and inspired attacks by the Islamic State (IS) since its announcement of a Caliphate on 29 Jun. 2014 to 29 May 2017. Attacks are occurring in 2017 at a rate of one every 15 days. There were 101 attacks in 25 countries that killed 1,138 and injured 3,295. It covers all attacks tracked in the IntelCenter Database (ICD) as of 29 May 2017.

Methodology Note:
All attacks associated with IS were counted on the map including both directed, supported and inspired attacks. Inspired, supported and directed attacks tied to al-Qaeda or other jihadi groups are not shown. Attacks occurring in war zones and insurgent theaters were not counted such as those in Iraq, Syria and Libya. In countries like Egypt and Pakistan where parts of the country are part of an insurgency campaign, only significant attacks outside of that area were counted. In places like Bangladesh where there is an increasing volume of low-level attacks, only those significant ones were counted. Where the latitude and longitude for the attack are available, they are used. When not available the center point of the closest know area are used. The original source data for all incidents shown here is located in the Incident Component.

Additional reporting and original source materials are contained in the IntelCenter Database (ICD). Sign up for a free 10-day trial of the ICD and see additional details by clicking here.
