Jihadi Insurgency Threat by Country
Interactive Map

Jihadi insurgencies are at unprecedented levels and expanding aggressively. Never before in the history of jihadist groups have they maintained control over so much territory in the world. In the 2013-2014 period significant escalations are underway in Nigeria, Libya, Cameroon, Kenya, Egypt, Lebanon and elsewhere. More then 28 countries are dealing with full-fledged jihadist insurgencies or under significant threat as various jihadist groups begin to lay the groundwork for campaigns that go beyond occasional large-scale attacks. One of the most concerning areas is Kenya, where al-Shabaab has taken a two-prong strategy of increasing large-scale attacks while simultaneously launching an insurgent campaign of constant lower-level attacks in various parts of the country.

The map highlights countries where significant levels of insurgent activity by jihadi rebel groups is occurring and growing. It takes into consideration attacks, the physical presence of groups, threat statements, overall group messaging, current trends and more. The map is at the country level and does not distinguish regional differences within a country. For example, the jihadi threat in Russia or China at the insurgent level is fairly localized but due to its significance, all of Russia was marked. This does not mean all of Russia or China is facing a significant jihadi insurgency.

Three levels of threat are shown on the map with the darkest being the most severe and the lightest the least. The lightest level represents an insurgent campaign that has already begun or one that is in the early stages.
