This map shows terrorist attacks that killed 100 or more people from 2000 to 13 Nov. 2015 that were tracked in the IntelCenter Database (ICD) Incident Component as of 13 Nov. 2015. Guerrilla warfare style attacks and mass executions were not counted. A total of 29 attacks were identified. Attacks that kill 100 or more people are rare but not limited to any one part of the world. However, Iraq by far has more than any other country. Attacks with this level of lethality are typically conducted by the more sophisticated terrorist groups. A strong understanding of target availability, timing, tactics and the appropriate level of expertise and resources to execute the operation are often needed. Markets, schools, government facilities and mosques were the most common targets.
Methodology Note:
Guerrilla warfare style attacks and mass executions were not counted. Attacks with multiple locations were placed on the map at the dominant location. If there are additional locations, they are referenced in the info window. Points are placed on the map at the best determination of where the attack occurred. These range from the exact location to center points for a city or neighborhood. The map is updated with new attacks as they occur and additional historical attacks as they are identified. Full details on all attacks shown on the map are available in the Incident Component.
