In Apr. 2015, IntelCenter issued 111 FlashNet alerts. The highest volume of traffic was for Kenya with 25 alerts. Yemen and the United States tied for second with 13 alerts and the Iraq and Afghanistan tied for third with seven. Somalia came in fourth with 6. Syria, Pakistan and Libya tied for fifth with five.
The al-Shabaab attack on Garissa University and associated threats drove Kenya to number one. The fighting in Yemen was responsible for its tie with the US for number. The US alerts were largely the result of a shooting in the DC area that was determined not to be related to terrorism and the growing threat by the Islamic State.
The United States, France, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Kenya, Yemen, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria and Egypt are all expected to see elevated levels going forward with increased traffic for Western countries impacted by the threats made by the Islamic State (IS).
A significant volume of FlashNet traffic for a particular country is typically an indicator of an increased threat in that country. IntelCenter's FlashNet alerts are sent out when a significant terrorist incident occurs or threat by terrorist or rebel group is made. Alerts are also sent out for developments which may result in an immediate increased threat, such as the arrest of key group members. Warnings by embassies and other government agencies of threats also trigger alerts.
FlashNet alerts are sent out 24/7 by email and SMS text message around the world. For more details or to get a free 10-day trial, click here.
