A significant volume of FlashNet traffic for a particular country is typically an indicator of an increased threat in that country. IntelCenter's FlashNet alerts are sent out when a significant terrorist incident occurs or threat by terrorist or rebel group is made. Alerts are also sent out for developments which may result in an immediate increased threat, such as the arrest of key group members. Warnings by embassies and other government agencies of threats also trigger alerts.
In Apr. 2014, IntelCenter issued 161 FlashNet alerts. The highest volume of traffic was from the US with 21 alerts and is largely the result of traffic associated with the 2 Apr. Ft. Hood shooting. Kenya ranked second highest at 19 due to an escalating series of attacks and threat warnings tied to al-Shabaab. Yemen ranked third at 15 due to increased activity by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). Somalia came in a close fourth at 14 due to increased threat traffic from al-Shabaab. Nigeria came in 5th at 11 due to increased activity by Boko Haram.
The US is expected to drop back down to normal levels going forward while activity in Kenya, Yemen, Somalia and Nigeria is expected to escalate further. Increased threats in Libya and Afghanistan are expected to result in increased levels there as well in the future.
