A significant volume of FlashNet traffic for a particular country is typically an indicator of an increased threat in that country. IntelCenter's FlashNet alerts are sent out when a significant terrorist incident occurs or threat by terrorist or rebel group is made. Alerts are also sent out for developments which may result in an immediate increased threat, such as the arrest of key group members. Warnings by embassies and other government agencies of threats also trigger alerts.
The highest volume of traffic in Mar. 2014 was from Afghanistan with 16 alerts and is representative of the increased threat posed by the Taliban in the period leading up to the elections. Kenya ranked second highest at 10 due to great concern over further large-scale attacks by al-Shabaab. The US spiked up to third in March as a result of alert traffic connected to multiple specific threats made by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) in its Inspire magazine. Somalia, Yemen and Nigeria remain high due to the high level of threats coming from al-Shabaab, AQAP and Boko Haram respectively.
FlashNet alerts are sent out 24/7 by email and SMS text message around the world. For more details or to get a free 30-day trial to FlashNet, click here. Enterprise users have FlashNet included in your package, simply let your POC know you would like the FlashNet feed to be added to your profile.
