In Sep. 2014, IntelCenter issued 125 FlashNet alerts. The highest volume of traffic was from Yemen with 22 alerts. The spike in traffic from Yemen is largely due to the advances of al-Huthi rebels. Syria came in second with 20 alerts due to fighting there and the Islamic State's (IS) activities. Somalia came in third at 11 with the US in fourth at eight. The elevated US level is largely due to threats made by IS and al-Shabaab.
Kenya, Yemen, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria and Egypt are all expected to see elevated levels going forward.
A significant volume of FlashNet traffic for a particular country is typically an indicator of an increased threat in that country. IntelCenter's FlashNet alerts are sent out when a significant terrorist incident occurs or threat by terrorist or rebel group is made. Alerts are also sent out for developments which may result in an immediate increased threat, such as the arrest of key group members. Warnings by embassies and other government agencies of threats also trigger alerts.
FlashNet alerts are sent out 24/7 by email and SMS text message around the world. For more details or to get a free 10-day trial to FlashNet, click here.
