The following charts show terrorist and rebel incidents involving vehicular bombings (VBIED) by country tracked by IntelCenter in the ICD Incident Component for 2014 as of 29 Jan. 2015.
In 2014 there were 851 terrorist and rebel incidents involving VBIEDs in 21 countries. The highest number of incidents occurred in Iraq at 53% (452). Syria came in second at 12% (101) although the number is most likely much higher due to the nature of reporting from there. Afghanistan came in third at 9% (79). Yemen came in fourth at 6% (54) with Somalia following in fifth at 5% (45).
In 2015, Iraq is expected to remain dominant with Syria continuing to grow, especially if reporting from Syria improves. Significant increases are expected in Yemen, Somalia, Nigeria, Libya, Lebanon and Egypt.
In total for the 851 incidents, 4,779 people were killed and 8,557 injured. On average six people were killed per incident and 10 injured. The highest number killed in any one incident was 120 and the lowest zero. The highest number injured in any one incident was 150 and the lowest zero.
Methodology Note:
VBIED attacks involving multiple VBIEDs were counted as one incident. While IntelCenter makes every attempt to identify all incidents, the nature of reporting makes that nearly impossible. These numbers should be viewed as minimums with the total number likely higher where it could be expected to be so. The original source data for all incidents shown here is located in the IntelCenter Database (ICD) Incident Component.
The IntelCenter Database (ICD) allows users to easily create charts tracking tactics and targeting along with many other metrics related to terrorist and rebel groups. As of 29 Jan. 2015, the ICD has detailed records on more than 128,000 incidents. IntelCenter also provides analytical support services on terrorist and rebel tactics and targeting.
