IntelCenter Number Killed by Terrorist/Rebel Groups by Country for May 2014

Number Killed by Terrorist/Rebel Groups
by Country for May 2014

The following chart shows the number of people killed by terrorist and rebel groups by country that were tracked in the IntelCenter Database (ICD) Incident Component for May 2014.

In May 2014, IntelCenter tracked 1,005 terrorist and rebel incidents. One or more people were killed by terrorist or rebel groups in 493 of those. A total of 3,171 people were killed. The average killed per attack was 3.16. The highest killed in any one attack was 300.

Nigeria had the most killed by far at 1,022. Iraq came in second at 459. Syria came in third at 373 and Yemen fourth at 350. Somalia was fifth at 250 and Afghanistan at sixth with 163. Pakistan at seventh was last among the countries with more than 100 killed at 117.

Due to the nature of reporting, all these numbers are likely to be higher in actuality with Syria likely to be the most underreported.

Methodology Note:
While IntelCenter makes every attempt to identify all incidents, the nature of reporting makes that nearly impossible. These numbers should be viewed as minimums with the total number likely higher where it could be expected to be so. The deaths of terrorist or rebels by security forces were not counted. This report is focused on counting the deaths of the victims of terrorist and rebel attacks, however, if two rebel groups attacked each other their deaths were counted. The original source data for all incidents shown here is located in the IntelCenter Database (ICD) Incident Component.

The IntelCenter Database (ICD) allows users to easily create charts tracking tactics and targeting along with many other metrics related to terrorist and rebel groups. As of 8 Jun. 2014, the ICD has detailed records on more than 120,000 incidents. IntelCenter also provides analytical support services on terrorist and rebel tactics and targeting.

Reporting and original source materials are contained in the IntelCenter Database (ICD). Sign up for a free 14-day trial of the ICD and see additional details by clicking here.
