The following chart shows terrorist and rebel worldwide incidents by Primary Target Sector tracked in the IntelCenter Database (ICD) Incident Component for 2015 as of 29 Apr. 2015.
During the period there were 3,518 terrorist and rebel incidents worldwide. The Primary Tactic with the highest number of incidents was Guerrilla Warfare at 48% (1,676). IED was the second highest at 16% (547) with Small Arms coming in third at 9% (331). VBIED came in fourth at 5% (175). Artillery came in fifth at 3% (113) with Kidnapping just behind in sixth at 3% (108). In 1% (37) of incidents, the tactic was unknown.
Methodology Note:
Guerrilla Warfare represents attacks which often use a variety of tactics and are often larger military-style movements. Small Arms often represent shootings. Coordinated Assault, also commonly referred to as complex attacks, frequently involve multiple tactics used in a coordinated fashion, such as the use of a VBIED to breach the perimeter followed by gunmen storming the breach. While IntelCenter makes every attempt to identify all incidents, the nature of reporting makes that nearly impossible. These numbers should be viewed as minimums with the total number likely higher where it could be expected to be so. It is also common for many attacks in high volume areas to not be attributed to a specific group. This report only covers incidents attributed to a specific group. The original source data for all incidents shown here is located in the IntelCenter Database (ICD) Incident Component.
The IntelCenter Database (ICD) allows users to easily create charts tracking tactics and targeting along with many other metrics related to terrorist and rebel groups. As of 29 Apr. 2015, the ICD has detailed records on more than 131,000 incidents. IntelCenter also provides analytical support services on terrorist and rebel tactics and targeting.
